Suggested Diets for Chronic Inflammatory Diseases such as Asthma, Arthritis, and Celiac Disease

Inflammation has much to do with many of the chronic diseases known to man.  The ones that I am concentrating on today are Asthma, Arthritis and Celiac Disease.  Why, because Asthma seems to hit individuals early and later in life.  While Arthritis comes later in life and Celiac Disease spans the entire life of an individual.  So I am covering with these diseases, the entire life span of an individual.  So what do all these diseases have in common?  Answer inflammation of one sort or another.  The idea to combat these diseases is to eat foods that are anti-inflammatory.

Starting with Gluten-free food, these flours are an excellent source of anti-inflammatory foods. They have been proven effective for pain and injury in arthritis, helping stop the formation of the inflammation factor in asthma, and just a plain miracle food in Celiac Disease.

Apples are wonderful anti-inflammatory and pro alkaline fruit.  The old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is really true.  Research indicates that eating 3 to 5 apples a week will decrease asthma attacks approximately 30 percent.  It will also decrease gastric reflux attacks.

Tart cherries are known to have the highest anti-inflammatory content of most foods.  Studies have shown tart cherries, juice and dried cherries especially effective for osteoarthritis pain.

Caffeine has been shown to prevent inflammation in the development of cardiovascular and other diseases.  New studies are showing that people that drink coffee live longer.

A new study on postmenopausal women noted that a diet of anti-inflammatory foods such as: healthy fats, vegetables and fruit, whole grains and gluten-free grains, prevented osteoporosis and bone fracture.

Lastly, researchers have found that resveratrol, a compound in red wine, has anti-inflammatory effects.

Sodas and Seniors: A Bad Combination

For sixty years the Baby Boomers as a demographic group have been a strong, influential group.  They tried marijuania, but stayed away from cigarettes.  Their search for healthy exercise started many fitness centers around the world.  Their focus on healthy and different foods started many different restaurants including vegan, vegetarian and healthy American restaurants.  But the one thing the Baby Boomers are also known for is their love of soda.  Constant consumption of sodas influenced the expansion of many soda manufacturers.  These companies advertise that their sodas were refreshing, caused harmony, gave you energy, etc.  Not once did these companies, like the fast food restaurants, ever say that their product was healthy. Never!  The results of the consumption of sodas for sixty years by the Baby Boomer (now seniors) is in and it is not good. 

Prior studies have already linked sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) with weight gain and type 2 diabetes.  This is not mentioning the adverse effect on teeth.  Now for the newest disease links to sodas : From the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition comes the link between sugar-sweeten beverages and Coronary disease risk in women.  Another study noted in this same journal was the association of sodas and prostate cancer.  In 2013, a study centered on the risk of lymphoma and leukemia in the 60ish population found an increase risk with the comsumption of soda.  The greater risk of stroke is what a different study found in men and women ingesting soda.  Osteoporosis and hip fractures has increased for women with the frequency of soda consumption.  Men are also starting to show an increase in the risk of hip fractures with soda consumption.  A study done in 2014, connected the consumption of sugar-sweeten beverages and the risk of Rheumatoid arthritis for women.  Finally soda consumption and the development of chronic inflammatory disease and cardiovascular disease is consistently increasing.  This is not good news for the Baby Boomers with a soda habit.  Maybe it is time to substitute other beverages for soda.
