Oat Grains Prove better than Wheat – Again!

Once again research has found the nutritional value of oats and it’s ability to reduce cholesterol.  This time the numbers were even better.  In a recent study done at the University of Kentucky college of Medicine updated versions of studies done in 1997 and 2002 were done.  This study confirmed that oat fiber consumption reduced LDL cholesterol as compared to wheat fiber which raised the LDL (the bad cholesterol), reduced the risk for elevated blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and weight gain.  Oat fiber studies showed that oats reduced the LDL without creating problems or changes in the blood triacylglycerol or HDL – cholesterol concentration.  Oatmeal was also found to have unique properties that can lead to reducing early hardening of the arteries.  The data suggests that the benefits from eating oatmeal goes beyond some of the benefits listed previously.  Adding Oat fiber to our diet will have cardioprotective effects that should not be ignored.
