Is Celiac Disease associated with Hair Loss?

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

Celiac disease , an autoimmune disease, is known to be present in individuals with other autoimmune disorders. The most prevelant being Type 1 Diabetes, Thyroid diseases, and Lupus. Now Celiac disease is associated with hair loss. In research conducted in Italy, researchers found a link between Alopecia Areata (autoimmune hair loss) and Celiac disease. Many patients that had Alopecia also tested positive to Celiac. When the patients were put on a gluten-free diet the patients’ hair grew back. The researchers were quick to note that Alopecia is very unpredictable and sometimes the hair will grow back for no reason. However, for men (and women) with hair loss, who have family members with Celiac disease; this research is something to think about.
